Homocysteine, Folate, Methylation, and Monoamine Metabolism in Depression

T Bottiglieri et al. J Neurol Neurosurg Psychiatry. 2000 Aug.

It concluded that there a subgroup of depressives have a folate deficiency, impaired methylation (improper gene expression), and (resultant?) improper neurotransmitter metabolism. Further, normal lab test are not sufficient to diagnosis this condition, but the total plasma homocysteine test can; and there is a potential benefit to filling the deficiency.

Vitamin deficiencies and mental health: How are they linked?

Current Psychiatry. 2013 January;12(1):37-44

By

Drew Ramsey, MD

Since 2013, it has been known that vitamins B2, B6 , B9 and B12 deficiencies and insufficiencies interfer with methylation, the reading of specific genes, allowing the cells, and thus the body, to adapt to changes which impact the body. If not sufficiently supplied, the cells cannot adapt, but continue doing chores no longer needed, so that new chores don't get started. Example: the immune system continues to be ready to fight an old pathogen while being attacked by a new one. Getting confused, it may attack the body, and keep attacking it, which creates immune system disorders.
